Antibiotic use in aquaculture reflects the disease burden that impoverished environments impose on farmed fish. When stocking densities are high, water quality is poor, and fish are immunocompromised by stress, disease flourishes and antibiotics become the default response. Addressing the root causes, reducing stress, improving water quality, and decreasing stocking density, would reduce antibiotic dependence while simultaneously improving welfare. The Norwegian example, where vaccine development and industry restructuring virtually eliminated antibiotic use in salmon farming, demonstrates that high-volume production and low antibiotic dependence are compatible. The welfare and antimicrobial resistance arguments for reducing aquaculture antibiotic use point in the same direction: address the conditions that make disease endemic.
