Navicular syndrome causes significant chronic pain and welfare impairment in affected horses. Historically, the diagnosis was often a death sentence or at minimum an end to ridden work. Modern veterinary understanding recognizes navicular syndrome as a spectrum of conditions involving different anatomical structures, allowing more targeted treatment. Appropriate shoeing — particularly rolling the toe and elevating the heel to reduce stress on the navicular apparatus — provides meaningful pain relief. Anti-inflammatory medication and bisphosphonate therapy reduce bone remodeling and pain. Horses that are managed carefully can often continue in light work with good welfare, though heavily affected horses require retirement from work and ongoing pain management.
