The gap between aquaculture sustainability certification and meaningful animal welfare protection represents one of the most significant unresolved animal welfare challenges of our time. Consumers who purchase ASC-certified salmon or tilapia may assume they are buying humanely produced fish, but current certification criteria often fall short of addressing fundamental welfare concerns: stocking density limits, slaughter humaneness, disease management, and environmental enrichment. The sheer scale of farmed fish production — tens of billions of animals annually — means that improving certification standards would benefit more individual animals than almost any other welfare intervention. Closing this gap requires both stronger standards from certification bodies and genuine consumer and retailer demand for fish welfare accountability.
