Pig enrichment science has moved beyond simple recommendations toward evidence-based guidance on what materials work, why they work, and how to maintain their effectiveness. The critical insight is that pigs need to perform manipulable behaviors — rooting, chewing, investigating — not merely have objects present in their environment. Fixed chains or rubber balls provide minimal welfare benefit because they do not allow exploration and destruction. Straw, compost, silage, and other destructible organic materials satisfy rooting drives much more effectively. The welfare and economic case for enrichment is compelling: tail biting alone causes enormous suffering and economic losses in commercial herds, and appropriate enrichment provision dramatically reduces its incidence. Enrichment is not a luxury but a fundamental welfare requirement.
