Technology is beginning to transform the capacity for welfare monitoring in aquaculture, an industry that has historically relied on periodic visual inspection of dense fish populations where individual welfare assessment is practically impossible. Computer vision systems that continuously monitor behavioral indicators — schooling cohesion, surface crowding, feeding activity, and swimming pattern — can detect welfare deterioration in real time and trigger management interventions before problems escalate. These technologies also generate welfare data at a scale that enables scientific progress in understanding fish behavioral needs. The challenge is that technology can monitor welfare but cannot substitute for the management commitment and husbandry standards that determine actual welfare outcomes. Technology adoption must accompany, not substitute for, meaningful welfare standards.
