Equine asthma welfare impacts follow a pattern common in respiratory disease: the condition imposes chronic discomfort and exercise limitation while simultaneously being substantially preventable through management changes. Horses in dusty stabling environments inhale organic dust, mold spores, and other allergens with every breath — a chronic exposure that drives airway inflammation and remodeling over time. The welfare tragedy is that the primary driver — dusty stabling — is an artifact of management choice rather than an inevitable feature of horse keeping. Outdoor living, soaked or steamed hay, and low-dust bedding such as paper or hemp can dramatically reduce or eliminate environmental allergen exposure. For horses already showing clinical disease, these management changes combined with appropriate medication can restore comfortable breathing and exercise capacity.
