Atlantic and Pacific halibut are increasingly farmed flatfish with specific welfare needs related to their unique biology and intensive production challenges.
Halibut welfare in aquaculture addresses species-specific needs that differ substantially from the better-studied salmonid systems. As flatfish, halibut evolved resting on substrate — tank systems that force them to compete for bottom space create welfare challenges that surface-oriented fish species do not face. Appropriate tank design with substrate or slope accommodation reduces competition stress. Light management is particularly important for halibut: inappropriate photoperiod causes welfare-relevant behavioral abnormalities and reproductive dysfunction in broodstock. Disease management requires careful attention to welfare-humane treatment protocols. As halibut farming expands commercially, developing welfare standards specific to their needs — rather than applying salmonid standards inappropriately — is a priority for the aquaculture welfare science community.
