Equine Cushings disease (PPID) affects a quarter of horses over 15 years and causes profound welfare harm through laminitis, infections, and hormonal dysregulation.
PPID welfare impacts are broad and interconnected, creating a syndrome of deteriorating welfare across multiple domains simultaneously. The hypertrichotic coat traps heat and causes thermal discomfort; immunosuppression allows dental disease, parasite burdens, and skin infections to develop unchecked; muscle wasting from cortisol excess reduces mobility and physical capacity; and laminitis risk creates the constant threat of one of the most painful conditions in equine medicine. Early PPID diagnosis and pergolide therapy interrupts this cascade, allowing most treated horses to maintain good quality of life for years beyond when untreated horses would develop severe welfare compromise. Regular ACTH monitoring ensures dose adequacy as the disease progresses and medication requirements increase over time.
