Welfare technology offers genuine promise for improving farmed animal welfare by enabling earlier detection of problems and more consistent monitoring than human observation alone can provide. A stockperson managing thousands of animals cannot observe each individual closely every day; automated systems that flag individuals with abnormal activity patterns or behavioral changes fill this gap. The welfare benefit depends critically on what happens when a welfare alert is triggered — technology that identifies problems but is not linked to responsive action provides limited benefit. The deeper challenge is that PLF technologies measure welfare indicators but do not address the root causes of welfare problems; sensors that detect lameness are less valuable than management practices that prevent it. At their best, welfare technologies accelerate both detection and producer motivation to improve conditions.
