Abalone welfare sits at an interesting frontier in invertebrate sentience research. The scientific evidence for pain experience in molluscs is less developed than for fish, but the presence of nociceptive systems and behavioral responses to noxious stimuli suggests welfare consideration is appropriate under the precautionary principle. Practically, the welfare concerns most clearly documented in abalone aquaculture involve environmental stress from poor water quality and high density — factors that impair growth and health and thus have both welfare and commercial implications. Slaughter methods for abalone have received almost no welfare-specific attention; applying similar standards of care to abalone slaughter as are developing for fish would be a logical precautionary extension of welfare concern. The slow growth rate of abalone makes improvements in welfare conditions particularly economically significant: a welfare failure that kills abalone after two years of growth represents a larger loss than with faster-growing species.
