Treatment options present their own welfare tradeoffs: chemical bath treatments expose fish to stressful handling and chemical stress; cleaner fish used for biological control face documented welfare challenges in overstocked holding conditions and high mortality from disease and handling. The welfare imperative is to reduce lice burden through integrated management — site selection, coordinated treatment, vaccination research, genetic selection for resistance — while minimizing the welfare costs of treatment procedures. Consumer certification programs that include lice burden monitoring provide market incentives for maintaining lower infestation levels.
