Equine metabolic syndrome is a chronic hormonal disorder causing laminitis and significant suffering, requiring lifelong dietary and exercise management.
EMS represents one of the most common sources of preventable chronic pain in horses. Owners who fail to recognise EMS or who cannot implement dietary restriction expose their horses to recurrent laminitis episodes. Laminitis causes severe lamellar pain often rated as equivalent to kidney stone pain in humans. Management requires significant owner commitment: soaking hay, eliminating high-sugar feeds, using grazing muzzles, and restricting pasture access. Welfare audits should include EMS screening for susceptible breeds, particularly obese ponies. Early intervention before laminitis becomes structural prevents the most severe outcomes.
