Emu welfare is a niche but real issue in agricultural welfare, affecting tens of thousands of birds in commercial settings. Their high intelligence and sensitivity to environmental conditions makes inadequate housing particularly damaging. Emus in barren, small paddocks show stereotypic pacing and heightened stress responses to routine management. The absence of specific welfare regulations for ratites in most jurisdictions means standards depend entirely on individual farm practice. Slaughter presents particular challenges because traditional poultry methods are ineffective for large ratites, and improper stunning is common. The commercial sector lacks the welfare research base that exists for conventional poultry, making evidence-based improvement more difficult.
