Nest box access reduces frustration from thwarted nesting motivation, and perches improve bone health, but these benefits occur in a context of profound spatial restriction. Welfare advocates rightly argue that the end goal must be cage-free systems rather than enriched colonies as a permanent endpoint. The EU cage-free commitment by 2027 reflects this trajectory, but implementation faces significant industry pushback.
