Trailer loading difficulty and transport stress are common welfare challenges for horses requiring patient training rather than force-based approaches.
Trailer loading difficulty often results from a horse previous negative transport experiences or from early training involving force. The welfare-positive approach treats loading as a training challenge requiring patience and systematic positive reinforcement rather than a compliance problem to be overcome by pressure. Forced loading causes acute fear and distress, and frequently worsens future loading by strengthening aversive associations with the trailer. Systematic desensitisation and positive reinforcement training, while requiring more initial time investment, produces horses who load calmly and experience less transport stress. Transport welfare extends beyond loading to journey management: appropriate vehicle, ventilation, and arrival care.
