HCM welfare management spans from asymptomatic detection through progressive disease to end-of-life decisions. Cats with asymptomatic HCM require monitoring rather than immediate treatment, but owners need accurate prognostic information to plan appropriately. The development of congestive heart failure, pleural effusion, or aortic thromboembolism transforms welfare acutely and dramatically. Aortic thromboembolism in particular causes sudden acute severe pain and distress in previously apparently normal cats, requiring immediate welfare-focused decision-making about treatment versus euthanasia. Proactive screening in predisposed breeds, genetic testing, and echocardiographic monitoring enables interventions at the most welfare-impactful timing.
