The potential aggregate welfare impact of improving shrimp slaughter is enormous: if shrimp experience any level of aversive awareness during killing, the hundred billion animals killed annually represents a welfare harm of staggering scale. Cold stunning before killing is technically feasible and is being implemented by some producers working with the Shrimp Welfare Project. The economic cost is modest relative to the potential welfare benefit. The precautionary principle, applied consistently to other areas of animal welfare science where certainty is absent, justifies similar application to shrimp slaughter improvement without waiting for complete scientific consensus.
