Salmon enrichment welfare research is at an exciting frontier where laboratory findings are beginning to translate into applied production recommendations. The principle that environmental complexity supports welfare applies as much to salmon as to terrestrial farmed species: a barren, uniform environment denies natural behavioural repertoire expression that is fundamental to positive welfare. Practical enrichment for net pen salmon faces scaling challenges that laboratory findings have not yet fully resolved, but structural enrichment trials in commercial pens are providing useful data. The welfare case for enrichment investment in salmon is strongest where it simultaneously reduces disease risk and mortality through behaviour normalisation, creating economic as well as ethical incentives.
