Tilapia have long been treated as among the most welfare-insignificant farmed fish because of their hardiness and adaptability to challenging conditions. However, hardiness does not equate to insensibility, and evidence clearly demonstrates that tilapia experience stress and discomfort across a range of husbandry conditions common in commercial production. The scale of global tilapia production means that even modest per-fish welfare improvements translate to enormous aggregate benefits. Key leverage points include stocking density management, water quality optimization, feed distribution systems that reduce competitive exclusion, and implementation of humane harvest and slaughter protocols. These improvements are achievable within existing production systems with modest investment and often generate productivity co-benefits.
