Reptiles are ectotherms that must behaviorally regulate their body temperature. Adequate thermal gradients are non-negotiable for reptile health and welfare in captivity.
Reptile welfare is frequently compromised by inadequate temperature management. Reptiles kept too cold or without temperature gradients cannot regulate their physiology and suffer chronic health problems. Proper husbandry requires understanding the thermal biology of each species and providing appropriate gradients using multiple heat sources. UV-B provision for species that require it is similarly non-negotiable.
