Barramundi welfare requires attention to both species-specific needs and the challenges of intensive aquaculture systems. Their aggressive nature means stocking density and size uniformity are critical welfare issues — size variation within tanks leads to competition, injury, and chronic stress for smaller fish. Water quality management in high-density systems must maintain adequate oxygen levels, ammonia and nitrite concentrations, and temperature appropriate to developmental stage. Pre-slaughter welfare improvements including reduced pre-harvest fasting duration and effective stunning methods are feasible and increasingly adopted in better-managed operations. The rapid growth of barramundi aquaculture means welfare standards established now will have lasting influence on industry practices.
