Stunning technology has improved dramatically but implementation quality remains the critical welfare variable. A stunning system that is theoretically effective can produce unacceptable outcomes when poorly calibrated, inconsistently applied, or inadequately audited. The shift to controlled atmosphere systems in pig slaughter removes human variability from the process — each animal enters the same environment — but the welfare profile of CO2 gas mixes remains problematic during induction. Research into argon-CO2 mixtures and high-concentration CO2 protocols continues. For poultry, LAPS represents a genuine welfare advance over water bath stunning because birds remain in groups on conventional transport systems, avoiding the additional stress of shackling. Stunning research is driven by both welfare science and regulatory pressure, with industry incentivised by the quality improvements that better pre-slaughter conditions produce.
