Welfare Considerations

Conventional cattle-handling infrastructure is poorly suited and dangerous for both bison and handlers. Temple Grandin has been influential in designing low-stress curved-chute handling systems specifically adapted to bison behaviour. Extensive range production on native or restored grasslands provides conditions closer to natural bison ecology and generally produces much better welfare outcomes than any intensive system. The ethical marketing of bison as a native species better suited to American ecosystems than cattle should be accompanied by genuine welfare standards — not just naturalistic imagery.
