Environmental modification — changing the physical and social environment — is the most effective intervention for many feline behavioural and health problems.
Environmental modification recognises that many cat behaviour and health problems are expressions of environmental inadequacy rather than inherent animal dysfunction. A cat scratching furniture is lacking appropriate scratching surfaces. A cat toileting outside the tray is responding to tray hygiene, location, or design problems. A cat hiding excessively is experiencing a stressor without adequate refuge. This perspective shifts the locus of responsibility from the cat to the environment, enabling effective solutions. The indoor cat welfare challenge is particularly significant: indoor environments must compensate for the loss of hunting, exploration, and territory patrolling that would occupy outdoor cats. Structured play sessions, food-dispensing toys, and vertical complexity are not luxuries but welfare necessities for cats confined indoors.
