Emerging technologies including AI monitoring, precision livestock farming, and biosensor tools are transforming the scale and granularity of animal welfare assessment.
Animal welfare technology promises to address the fundamental limitation of traditional welfare assessment — it depends on humans being present, observant, and skilled. Most farm animals are monitored intermittently by stockpeople who may miss subtle early signs of illness or distress. Continuous automated monitoring systems detect welfare-relevant signals 24 hours per day across entire flocks or herds, identifying problems earlier than manual checks. Early disease detection prevents prolonged suffering and reduces mortality. However, technology is not a substitute for adequate stockperson numbers and training — it is a supplement. The risk is that technology adoption becomes a justification for reducing human labour in animal care, degrading the animal-human relationship that is itself a welfare determinant. Technology should augment skilled care, not replace it.
