Trout disease management has a direct and significant welfare dimension. Bacterial infections like furunculosis cause visible suffering — open ulcerating lesions, haemorrhage, and systemic septicaemia produce prolonged distress before death. Even subclinical disease states cause immune activation, appetite suppression, and behavioural changes indicating negative affective states. The shift toward vaccine-based disease prevention in trout farming — particularly in Norwegian salmon and trout aquaculture — has been one of the most significant welfare improvements in commercial fish farming, dramatically reducing both antibiotic use and disease-related suffering. The challenge remains achieving similar standards in smaller operations and in producer countries with less regulatory framework for aquaculture disease management.
