Manta rays are large, highly mobile, cognitively complex animals that present extreme welfare challenges in any captive environment.
Manta ray captivity represents one of the clearest examples of a species for which the welfare costs of captivity cannot be overcome by any realistic enclosure design. Oceanic manta rays require open ocean conditions that are physically impossible to replicate in any human-built structure — tank walls become lethal obstacles for animals adapted to open-water movement. Reef manta rays have better survival records but still show significantly elevated stress indicators and shortened lifespans in captivity. The scientific and conservationist arguments for holding manta rays in aquariums — education and research — do not justify the severe welfare costs given available alternatives. Wild population research, remote monitoring, and in-situ research stations provide the same scientific data without captive welfare compromise. Leading welfare-conscious aquariums are removing manta rays from their collections entirely.
