The evidence for dehorning effectiveness is mixed and site-specific: in some reserves with good anti-poaching capacity, dehorning reduced poaching; in others where surveillance is inadequate, poachers still kill dehorned animals for the remaining stump. This means the welfare cost of the procedure is not always offset by reduced mortality risk.
