Shrimp welfare represents perhaps the largest unaddressed welfare issue in terms of number of individual animals affected. Hundreds of billions of shrimp are farmed annually under conditions with no welfare regulation in virtually any jurisdiction. The scientific debate on shrimp sentience mirrors that for other crustaceans — they demonstrate nociceptive responses and avoidance learning that suggest some capacity for experiencing negative stimuli. Eyestalk ablation, used to stimulate reproduction in farmed females, involves removing the eyestalk of conscious animals — a practice that would be prohibited for vertebrates under basic welfare regulations. Pre-slaughter killing methods — hot water or live freezing — are not designed to minimise potential suffering. The scale of production means that even modest welfare improvements would benefit enormous numbers of animals if implemented across the industry.
