In captivity, the same physiological state occurs but without the outlets that would naturally channel it. Isolated, confined bulls in musth experience a state of high arousal without appropriate expression — a welfare-relevant mismatch. Hormonal suppression of musth reduces management risk but intervenes in a natural physiological process.
