Not all pig enrichment is equal. Research on enrichment effectiveness helps producers prioritize materials that genuinely improve welfare rather than satisfying regulatory requirements minimally.
Enrichment quality matters as much as enrichment presence. Pigs provided with a hanging rubber ring satisfy minimum enrichment requirements but receive little actual welfare benefit because pigs engage briefly and habituate. Deep-litter bedding, compost, or straw that allows sustained rooting engagement provides dramatically better welfare outcomes because it enables the behavioral sequences that pigs are highly motivated to perform.
