Canine body language literacy is a welfare competency that every dog owner should develop. Dogs are communicating their emotional state continuously, but the signals are subtle and unfamiliar to many humans whose primary communication system is verbal. A dog showing whale eye, lip licking, and yawning during a veterinary examination or social interaction is signalling distress — but these signals are frequently invisible to untrained observers who see only a quiet, still dog. The welfare consequence of missed stress signals is continued pressure on an already stressed animal, escalation of fear, and eventual reactive or aggressive response that could have been prevented by appropriate de-escalation. Dogs who live with owners skilled in reading their body language experience fewer stressful situations, more appropriate interactions, and better long-term welfare.
