Economic logic in intensive production systems often results in individual animals being euthanized or left untreated rather than receiving care that exceeds their market value. This creates systematic welfare failures in poultry especially, where per-bird value is so low that any individual treatment is economically unviable. Addressing this requires policy interventions — subsidized rural vet training, regulated health monitoring, species-specific standards requiring veterinary oversight, and investment in preventive herd health programs that reduce the frequency of acute welfare crises.
