Laboratory rats are highly intelligent, empathetic, playful animals whose welfare needs are frequently undermet in research settings. Evidence of rat empathy, play, and ultrasonic communication reveals an inner life that warrants serious ethical consideration. Barren housing and social isolation create genuine suffering while simultaneously compromising research validity — stressed, socially deprived animals are poor models for understanding healthy mammalian biology. The scientific case for enrichment is as strong as the ethical case: enriched animals produce more reliable, reproducible results and better models of natural physiology and behavior. Institutional animal care programs must prioritize social housing and environmental enrichment as baseline requirements rather than optional upgrades.
