Cat stress physiology reflects their evolutionary history as solitary, territorial animals with high environmental control needs. Unlike many social animals that derive comfort from companionship, cats require control over their territory, resources, and social interactions to maintain low stress states. Forced cohabitation with incompatible cats, unpredictable environments, inadequate hiding spaces, and insufficient resources are common causes of chronic stress in companion cats.
