European sea bass welfare is an important but underinvestigated topic given the scale of Mediterranean aquaculture production. Their predatory nature and social complexity create inherent challenges in high-density aquaculture that lower-density production and environmental complexity can partially address. The territorial and hierarchical behavior that crowding disrupts is a welfare concern that produces chronic aggression, injury, and subordinate stress in dense production systems. Developing sea bass-specific welfare standards requires investment in behavioral research that understands how sea bass social and spatial needs can be accommodated within commercially viable aquaculture systems — the work has begun but the evidence base remains thin compared to salmonid welfare science.
