Equine respiratory welfare is fundamentally determined by the management decisions around stabling, feeding, and bedding. The concentration of dust, mold spores, and endotoxins in poorly ventilated stables with conventional hay and straw creates a chronic respiratory challenge that causes or exacerbates equine asthma in susceptible horses and causes subclinical respiratory irritation in all horses. Horses evolved as outdoor animals breathing relatively particle-free air — stabling is a human management choice that imposes respiratory costs that good management can reduce. Hay soaking or haylage feeding, dust-extracted bedding, maximized ventilation, and turnout time are all practical welfare interventions that address the root cause of most equine respiratory welfare problems.
