Tilapia water quality management directly determines the welfare of one of the most numerically significant farmed fish species globally. Unlike salmon which require pristine cold water, tilapia can tolerate a wider range of conditions — but this resilience is sometimes exploited by producers who allow water quality to degrade well beyond welfare-acceptable levels. Fish experiencing chronic poor water quality suffer through impaired oxygen delivery, gill damage from ammonia, and physiological stress from temperature and pH extremes that fall outside their comfort range. The welfare case for basic water quality monitoring and management is also a production case — stressed fish grow more slowly and are more disease susceptible.
