Rider fatigue affects horse welfare by degrading position quality and increasing the physical burden on horses during training and competition.
Rider fatigue as a horse welfare issue represents an important but underemphasized connection: when riders tire, their physical quality deteriorates in ways that directly affect the horse experience of being ridden. An unbalanced, tense, or poorly positioned tired rider creates more physical burden for the horse, communicates less effectively, and may inadvertently create conflicting aids that cause frustration and resistance. The welfare responsibility extends to riders maintaining their own fitness and recognizing when fatigue is degrading their riding quality to the point where horse welfare is affected. Shortening sessions, dismounting when tired, and investing in rider fitness are all horse welfare investments that the equestrian community rarely frames in these terms.
