Tail docking welfare involves a genuine trade-off: the pain of docking versus the risk and suffering of flystrike. In high-risk environments with susceptible breeds, docking reduces flystrike incidence. However, the way docking is performed matters greatly: adequate length preservation to cover the vulva reduces both welfare harm from over-docking and flystrike risk simultaneously. Mandatory pain relief for docking reduces acute welfare harm. Selective breeding for breeds with less flystrike susceptibility offers the long-term prospect of reducing or eliminating the need for docking entirely. The welfare calculus is not a simple binary between docking and flystrike but a complex management decision involving breed selection, environment, husbandry, and chemical control.
