Hybrid striped bass welfare represents a gap in US aquaculture welfare science: as a nationally important farmed species, these fish deserve welfare standards that are currently absent from their production. Their active, schooling nature and relatively high intelligence for a non-salmonid species creates welfare needs around stocking density, schooling group management, and handling stress that standard aquaculture approaches may not adequately address. Slaughter welfare is particularly concerning — live bleeding without prior stunning causes conscious suffering that could be prevented with electrical or percussive stunning methods.
