Advanced crayfish welfare requires systems thinking that follows the animal from pond to plate. The welfare challenges are different in extensive Louisiana systems — primarily disease, predation, and seasonal water quality — than in intensive Chinese systems where stocking density and water management are primary concerns. Transport and consumer-level killing, largely unregulated and rarely conducted humanely, represent the final and often worst welfare point in the supply chain. Building welfare frameworks for crayfish requires beginning with behavioral biology, developing validated welfare indicators, designing systems that meet behavioral needs, and educating consumers about humane killing methods. The absence of existing frameworks is an opportunity — building them now shapes industry practices before intensive production scales further.
