Tendon injuries in horses represent a significant welfare problem — they are painful, slow to heal, prone to re-injury, and frequently end athletic careers. Prevention requires understanding the biomechanical demands of athletic work and matching those demands to the current adaptation state of the horse's connective tissue. Training schedules must allow adequate recovery time between high-intensity sessions, as tendons adapt more slowly than cardiovascular and muscular systems. Young horses are particularly vulnerable during early training when tendons have not yet fully matured and collagen alignment is still developing. Footing selection matters enormously: deep, wet footing and hard dry ground both increase injury risk through different mechanisms. Post-exercise cooling with ice or cold water hosing reduces inflammatory damage in loaded tendons. Regular ultrasound screening — especially in performance horses — identifies subclinical fiber damage before it progresses to full rupture. When injury does occur, structured rehabilitation with serial ultrasound monitoring ensures return to work is biomechanically safe.
