Chimpanzee locomotor welfare in captivity is substantially compromised in most zoo settings, even those meeting minimum accreditation standards. The daily travel distances and locomotor variety of wild chimpanzees simply cannot be replicated in any exhibit; however, the degree to which exhibits approach naturalistic locomotor opportunity varies enormously. Concrete-floored exhibits with limited vertical complexity restrict chimpanzees primarily to terrestrial locomotion, causing musculoskeletal problems from inappropriate substrate loading and denying access to the elevated resting positions that provide both security and thermoregulatory benefits. State-of-the-art chimpanzee facilities provide large outdoor habitats with diverse climbing structures reaching heights of 10-15 meters, multiple substrate types including soft soil and grass, social groups of 10+ individuals to facilitate social locomotion, and indoor facilities with equivalent complexity for weather-restricted periods. Physical welfare assessment should include regular orthopedic examination, behavioral locomotor diversity monitoring, and substrate impact assessment to identify emerging musculoskeletal problems before they become severe.
