How wildlife corridors reduce suffering by allowing natural movement, reducing inbreeding, and preventing the social isolation and resource stress of fragmented habitat patches.
Wildlife corridors address animal welfare at multiple scales simultaneously: individual animals trying to move through fragmented landscapes suffer vehicle strikes, starvation when crossing unsuitable habitat, and the physiological stress of displacement. Populations isolated in habitat patches accumulate genetic problems including inbreeding depression that manifest as poor immune function, reduced fertility, and increased disease susceptibility in individual animals. The welfare argument for corridors is therefore both individual (reducing vehicle mortality and movement-related stress) and population-level (maintaining genetic and demographic health that prevents the chronic welfare deterioration of small isolated populations). Corridor design must consider the specific movement ecology of target species: road overpasses must be wide enough and planted appropriately for target species; riparian corridors must maintain native vegetation; urban greenways must minimize disturbance and lighting interference. The wildlife crossing infrastructure movement, exemplified by the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing across the 101 freeway in Los Angeles (completed 2023), demonstrates that political will and funding can be secured for major corridor projects when welfare and conservation arguments are effectively communicated.
