Mandrill welfare in captivity is fundamentally challenged by the vast gulf between wild social complexity and what any zoo can provide. In the wild, mandrills live in enormous social hordes where individuals have hundreds of potential social partners, complex status hierarchies, and extensive space for subgroup formation and individual retreat. Captive groups of 5-15 individuals compress this social complexity dramatically, forcing interactions that might not occur voluntarily in the wild and preventing the fluid subgroup dynamics that allow conflict avoidance. Dominant males in particular face welfare challenges: they cannot establish meaningful territories, cannot reliably control access to females, and must tolerate proximity to subordinate males in ways that generate chronic social stress. Exhibit design for mandrills must maximize visual complexity, provide multiple retreat areas allowing individuals to avoid unwanted social contact, include extensive foraging enrichment that distributes social proximity across the exhibit, and provide environmental features allowing expression of natural climbing and terrestrial locomotion. Regular behavioral monitoring using group-specific ethograms identifies stress accumulation and informs management interventions before welfare deteriorates.
