Tilapia welfare exists in a neglected space in aquaculture welfare science: despite being one of the most numerically significant farmed species globally — with billions of individual fish affected annually — welfare research and regulation for tilapia is far behind that applied to salmon. This neglect reflects the species' hardiness, its concentration in lower-income producing countries with less regulatory capacity, and historical assumptions that welfare considerations are less relevant for teleost fish. These assumptions are inconsistent with current neuroscience: tilapia possess the neurobiological substrates for pain and distress, and research demonstrates stress responses to handling, crowding, and poor water quality that are physiologically equivalent to those in more closely studied species. The extraordinary stocking densities used in intensive tilapia production generate water quality deterioration — ammonia accumulation, oxygen depletion — that causes chronic respiratory stress and physiological compromise. Improving tilapia welfare requires bringing the same evidence-based attention to this species that is increasingly applied to salmon, including density standards, water quality requirements, and humane slaughter protocols.
