Hippo welfare in captivity centers fundamentally on the provision of adequate aquatic environments for a semi-aquatic megafauna species whose thermoregulatory physiology requires extended water immersion. Common hippos in inadequate pools — too shallow, too small, or without appropriate temperature management — suffer from skin desiccation, overheating, and the behavioral frustration of inability to submerge and move in water. Social management of common hippos is extremely complex: wild pods have complex dominance hierarchies with substantial aggression, and captive groups without adequate space and resources for conflict avoidance experience chronic social stress and serious injury risk. Dental health monitoring requires careful management given the size and aggression risk of adult hippos — positive reinforcement training for voluntary mouth presentation is increasingly practiced as a welfare improvement over chemical restraint. Pygmy hippos, while smaller and less aggressive, have equally demanding aquatic habitat requirements relative to their body size. Both species benefit from exhibits that allow both aquatic activity and land grazing, mirroring wild time budget patterns.
