The catastrophic welfare situation facing North American bat populations from white-nose syndrome, wind turbine mortality, and roost loss, and how conservation reduces bat suffering.
Wild bat welfare is a crisis of immense scale that receives little attention compared to charismatic megafauna. White-nose syndrome causes death through a prolonged and distressing process: the fungus irritates hibernating bats, causing premature arousal from torpor, burning of fat reserves during winter periods when no food is available, and death from starvation or cold exposure. An individual bat dying from WNS experiences weeks of metabolic distress, depletion, and ultimately fatal hypoglycemia or hypothermia — not a rapid death. Multiplied across millions of individuals across multiple species, the aggregate welfare cost is enormous. Wind turbine mortality adds a separate significant welfare problem: bats killed by barotrauma around turbine blades experience sudden internal hemorrhaging. Roost destruction disrupts maternity colonies and causes separation of mothers from dependent pups, a significant welfare harm for highly social species with strong maternal bonds. Protecting bats through roost preservation, WNS probiotic treatment programs, curtailment of wind turbines during high-risk migration periods, and public education about bat ecological services all simultaneously serve welfare and conservation goals.
