Evidence-based approaches to optimizing welfare for stabled horses, covering stable design, ventilation, enrichment, social contact, and the minimum standards for confined equine housing.
Stable housing for horses represents a necessary management reality for many owners, but the welfare costs of stabling must be actively mitigated through evidence-based design and management rather than accepted as inevitable. The fundamental incompatibility between horse physiology and stable confinement — continuous forage animals confined from foraging, highly social animals isolated from conspecifics, movement-adapted animals denied locomotion — creates welfare deficits that accumulate over time into significant health and behavioral problems. Respiratory disease from hay dust, ammonia, and poor ventilation is endemic in stabled horses; gastric ulcers from forage restriction are extremely common; and behavioral problems including stereotypies develop at far higher rates in stabled than pasture-kept horses. Welfare optimization within the constraint of stabling requires: minimum stable sizes allowing lying, rolling, and turning; maximum forage availability through ad libitum provision or slow-feeder systems; social contact through grille partitions; adequate ventilation reducing dust and ammonia below irritating levels; and maximum daily turnout. These are not luxury additions but welfare minimums for confinement that is already highly restrictive.
